History of Killen
The territory known as
Killen today was first settled in the early 1800s. At this time, the town was called Masonville. This early community consisted of little more than a grocer/post office combined and a handful of homes. However, when the Muscle Shoals Canal was completed in 1890, the area exploded with growth.
In around 1895, a man by the name of James Killen built a large general store and a separate post office in Masonville and applied to change the town's name. At this time, the town was renamed Killen. Killen was incorporated in 1957, at which time a police department was established as well. Today, Killen is a charming little community with several small businesses, churches, schools and lovely homes.
