Muscle Shoals, Alabama

Muscle Shoals, AL Real Estate, Muscle Shoals Area and Community Information

Muscle Shoals, Alabama, is located in the extreme northwestern part of the state. With a population of approximately 14,000, Muscle Shoals is the largest city in Colbert County. The Northwest Alabama Regional Airport lies just to the east of town.

History

Prior to the arrival of those of European descent, the area was a Cherokee hunting ground. After the Revolutionary War, the Cherokees divided into two groups. The Chickamauga were opposed to the settlement of the area by outsiders. In the late 18th century, they consistently opposed attempts by settlers to establish communities here. The federal government did not fully succeed in taking control of the area until after the War of 1812, when it mounted a full invasion of Creek territories.

Parks and Recreation

The 67,000-acre Wheeler Lake is the one of the largest reservoirs on the Tennessee River in the northern part of the state. The Tennessee Valley Authority created Wheeler Lake to produce hydroelectric power and control flooding. For those with Muscle Shoals AL homes, a byproduct of this effort was the establishment of an excellent fishing lake. The reservoir is named for Fightin' Joe Wheeler, a Civil War general who settled in the area after the war. At Joe Wheeler State Park, there are boat, kayak and paddleboard rentals available. There's also a marina that caters to the needs of the many boaters and anglers that visit Wheeler Lake.

Attractions and Activities

The Shoals offers a spectacular 36-holes of true championship golf. The Fighting Joe course can play at more than 8,000 yards from the back tees. It features a monumental 716-yard par-5 on the back nine. However, this Robert Trent Jones test offers four sets of tees, with the course playing at less than 5,000 yards from the shortest tees. Meanwhile, the Schoolmaster course plays at "only" about 7,900 yards.

Events

The W.C. Handy Music Festival is a ten-day July event that has been held every year for over three decades. It is named for W.C. Handy, known in the area as the "Father of the Blues." It is held at the University of Northern Alabama in nearby Florence.
